T6 Tower: a complex reclamation

As part of a major decommissioning of the chemical pole of Rodano-Pioltello on the outskirts of Milan, a complex operation: the reclamation and subsequent demolition of the T6 evaporative tower. Complex for several reasons: the artefact is very degradedHowever, it is still completely full of the asbestos-cement lamellae, which are in such an obvious state of decay that Armofer, together with the client, had to treat them as if they were loose matrix material, with the utmost safety precautions. Moreover, the T6 tower is on the property boundary, flush with the public road, and the amount of material to be removed is a lot (about 500 tons) contained in a small volume. Hence the decision, oriented to ensure maximum safety, to confine the entire building, enclosing even the top mouth with double PVC sheeting. Always with the aim of increasing safety, a floor was set up inside on which to work with the remote-controlled mini-robots, with the aim of minimising the presence and cumbersome operations of personnel within the confined area. The work was concluded with the demolition of the reinforced concrete structure.

PROJECT SCHEME

Step 1 Checking the state of decay and securing
Step 2 Design and realisation of static-dynamic confinement
Step 3 Floor construction and internal provisional works
Step 4 Customisation tools for remotely controlled robot remediation
Step 5 Mechanical and radio-controlled remediation of environmental liabilities
Step 6 Return of the artefact
Step 7: Top-down demolition of reinforced concrete structure
