Demolition of Japan Pavilion

Called the most beautiful of Expo 2015, the most visited, the most technological and multimedia, the Japan Pavilion bears the signature of architect Atsushi Kitagawara, who wanted to address the theme of 'harmonious diversity' and convey the message that in diversity and complexity we can cultivate the key to solving global problems. The structure of the pavilion is a three-dimensional wooden grid that defines architectonic volumes of aesthetic value, with characteristics of light prefabrication, eco-sustainability, ease of transport and dry assembly, rapid installation and high earthquake resistance. The rear part of the pavilion has very different characteristics: an important structure of steel beams and pillars and concrete or plasterboard infill. It was demolished using two tracked demolition excavators simultaneously equipped with hydraulic shears. Once on the ground, the main beams were hot-sectioned and recovered for the ready-to-fire oven. All the material, strictly sorted by C.E.R. codes, was stored on site and sent for recovery. Approximately 80 tonnes of iron; 50 tonnes of C&D waste; 30 tonnes of wood; 150 tonnes of plasterboard; 120 tonnes of insulation materials and 3 tonnes of glass.
